1. Installation
Manual install (current)
While the Office Store listing is under review, BlueMath installs with a small manifest file — about a minute on Windows, Mac, or Word on the web. Follow the step-by-step install guide. Once installed, a BlueMath tab appears on the ribbon with buttons for the math editor, BlueChem, LaTeX conversion, and exam tools — click Open BlueMath to show the task pane.
From the Office Store (coming soon)
- Open Microsoft Word and go to Home → Add-ins (or Insert → Get Add-ins on older versions).
- Search for BlueMath and click Add.
Requirements
- Microsoft Word 2016 or later on Windows or Mac, or Word on the web.
- An internet connection for sign-in and equation-rendering assets (all self-hosted — no third-party CDN).
2. Sign in
BlueMath uses passwordless email sign-in: enter your email address and type the one-time code we send you. Your account stores only your email and subscription status — see the Privacy Policy.
3. Writing equations
- Visual editor — click symbols and templates in the palette (Common, Algebra, Geometry, Calculus tabs + search in English or Vietnamese), or type directly. Common function names (
sin,lim,arcsin, …) auto-format upright as you type. - LaTeX mode — type raw LaTeX with a live preview.
- Text in equations — a Math/Text toggle lets you type regular text (including Vietnamese with full diacritics) inside an equation, e.g. cases like "x + 2 if x > 2".
- Insert — press Enter or click Insert. The equation lands at the cursor, sized to match the surrounding text by default.
- Edit later — click any BlueMath equation in the document and the editor loads it back. BlueMath can also read native Word equations and a selected legacy MathType object into the editor.
4. Insert modes, fonts & settings
Two ways to put an equation into the document (choose in ⚙ Settings):

Other settings:
- Auto size (default on) — new equations read the font size at the cursor so they blend into the paragraph.
- Formula color — a default ink color for new equations, plus per-document recoloring tools (see §5).
- Language — the pane is fully bilingual English/Vietnamese.
- Reset defaults — one button restores every style setting.

6. Exam tools in depth
Exam shuffle
Feed it a Vietnamese-style exam (multiple-choice, true/false, short-answer parts). BlueMath shuffles question and answer order without touching the formulas — content blocks are reordered as-is, never re-rendered, so equations, images, and tables survive intact. You get a ZIP containing:
- One .docx per exam code (e.g. 1101, 1102, … — codes are editable), renumbered with re-lettered A/B/C/D answers and answer markings removed;
- Answer keys as CSV and XLSX (questions × codes);
- QR images per code for the UnT / TNMaker grading apps.
Put ## at the start of a question to lock it in place. Shuffling is per-part — questions never leak across parts. The free plan generates up to 2 codes per run; Pro is unlimited.
Word → ex_test (.tex)
Parses a multiple-choice exam (4 question types: choice, true/false, short answer, essay), detects answers from formatting (underline/highlight/red) or from the solution text, then opens a review screen where you confirm every answer before exporting an ex_test v3.1 LaTeX file. Missing answers become warnings, not blockers.
7. BlueChem (chemistry)
A dedicated chemistry tab using the same editor: reaction equations with \ce (arrows ->, <=>, states (s)(l)(g)(aq)), isotopes, ions, organic formulas, and physical-chemistry quantities (K, pH, ΔH…). Letters are typeset upright per chemistry convention. Its own palette covers Elements, Reactions, Organic, and Physical chemistry, with bilingual search.
8. Upgrading to Pro
Purchases are handled on this website, not inside the add-in. Open the Pricing page, sign in with the same email you use in the add-in, pay by bank transfer / MoMo (Vietnam) or PayPal (international), and confirm. Your account is upgraded after reconciliation (within 24 hours). The add-in picks up the new plan the next time it loads. Remaining trial days are added to your Pro period — upgrading early never costs you trial time.
9. FAQ
Does BlueMath upload my documents?
No. All equation conversion and rendering happens locally in Word on your machine. Only your email, subscription status, and (if you pay) payment reconciliation records are stored — see the Privacy Policy.
What happens when I'm offline?
Free features keep working with previously loaded assets. Features that need your subscription status show a "connection required" notice instead of failing silently.
Do my readers need BlueMath?
No. Inserted equations are ordinary Word content — images or native Word equations — and display for everyone. The add-in is only needed to edit them comfortably.
I found a formula that converts incorrectly.
MathType extraction is best-effort by design: suspicious conversions are highlighted for review instead of being silently changed, and the original object is preserved. Please email the sample to mrhoangblue@gmail.com so we can add the case.
10. Troubleshooting
- The BlueMath ribbon tab doesn't appear — restart Word after installing. If you sideloaded an older manifest before, remove it and clear the Office add-in cache (Windows: delete the contents of
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Wef; Mac:~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Documents/wef), then add the add-in again. - "Loading…" never finishes — the first load downloads rendering assets; check your connection and firewall, then close and reopen the pane.
- Equations look misaligned after "Clear formatting" — run the free Re-align equations tool in the Document tab to fix the whole file.
- Sign-in code doesn't arrive — check spam, or try again after a minute (codes are rate-limited).
11. Uninstall & account deletion
To remove the add-in: Home → Add-ins → More Add-ins → My Add-ins, click ⋯ on BlueMath and choose Remove. Documents are unaffected — inserted equations are ordinary Word content and remain visible and usable.
